“Freedom is something positive; to put it into words is as much an act of creation as to live it. Freedom is not just the absence of evil, but the presence of good.” As Timothy Snyder’s words suggest, freedom is a precious yet precarious virtue. For many, its realization comes at a high price—marked by imprisonment, repression, or the pain of exile. We cordially invite you to a series of events exploring the “Future of Freedom.”
In conversation with Basil Kerski—Director of the European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk and President of the Haus der Geschichte North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation—we will be joined by two powerful voices: Maxim Znak, the renowned Belarusian attorney and opposition figure, who will reflect on his five years of imprisonment as recounted in his book Zekamerone (Suhrkamp, 2023), and Ece Temelkuran, the Berlin-based Turkish author and journalist, whose work Nation of Strangers explores the inner lives of those forced into exile—people who, due to political upheaval, have become “involuntary global citizens“ and no longer feel at home even in the heart of Europe.
This event is organized with the kind support of the Federal Foreign Office.
9 € / 5 €, auch an der Abendkasse.
