Jacob Taubes in Berlin

Jacob Taubes (1923-1987) first came to the FU in 1961, after having taught at Hebrew University, Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia Universities. In 1966, he was appointed to two chairs at the FU, and headed two institutes, one in Judaistik, and another in Hermeneutik. Both through and beyond those institutes, he was a colorful, contentious, and influential figure at the university, and in the larger West German intellectual world. After a brief description of Taubes’ background and interests, the talk will focus on three topics. (1) The origins and significance of the professorship of Judaistik at the FU; (2) Taubes and the internationalization of academic life at the FU; (3) Taubes’ role in the radicalization and then deradicalization of the FU from the 1960s to the 1980s, exemplified by his role in “Fachbereich 11 für Philosophie und Sozialwissenschaften.”

Vortrag in englischer Sprache.

Die Veranstaltung findet im Rahmen des 75. Jubiläums der Freien Universität statt.
