Jennifer Neal’s debut novel Notes on Her Color combines Florida kitsch and magical realism in a coming-of-age story about a woman who learns to change the color of her skin. Ayanna Lloyd Banwo’s When We Were Birds, translated into German by Michaela Grabinger, tells a magical love story: Emmanuel, a young Rastafarian, works in Port Angeles, Trinidad at the cemetery, which is not only a resting place for the dead. The two young authors talk about storytelling beyond Western mythologies.
The event is part of the special programme Echo. Echo: Magical Echoesat the international literature festival berlin 2023. The series is a cooperation between the “Temporal Communities” Cluster of Excellence and the ilb.
